Like any other massage, oil is used in Swedish Massage. Five different massage techniques are used, including sliding, kneading, rhythmic tapping, friction and vibration. Hand pressure can range from gentle to promote relaxation, to firm, but not as firm as in deep tissue massage.
The person being massage usually lies naked underneath a sheet. The masseuse uncovers only the area she is working on.
Particular areas of the body may be focused on during a Swedish massage, usually areas of specific muscle tension.
Swedish massage has been shown to benefit those with joint stiffness or osteoarthritis of the knee. It provides temporary relief from pain. It can also improve circulation.
